Initial Research Questions

Terminology will be defined as we start the project-terms such as engage, collaboration etc.
We will also have to learn how to measure them.

Time and Size of Encounters:

  1. What is the optimal amount of time for encounters?
  2. What is the optimal size of groups for encounters?
  3. What time of the day seems to   work best for the encounters?

Eliciting Joy:

  1. Are there experiences that elicit more joy for elders? Children?
  2. Which experiences elicit the most joy for the group?
  3. Why? What is it about these experiences?
  4. Does the energy change and linger? For how long?

Staff and Participant Engagement:

  1. What is the optimal staff engagement throughout various experiences?
  2. Does engagement differ across experiences?
  3. If so, why?
  4. What types of preparatory conversations, professional development, and reflection optimize encounters for all participants?
  5. Do reflections inform the experiences of future engagements?

Eliciting Dialogue:

  1. What materials elicit meaningful interactions and dialogue?
  2. Children’s books?
  3. Adult books?
  4. Personal photographs?
  5. Sharing personal life stories?
  6. Sharing meaningful objects?
  7. Sharing Jewish ritual objects?

Environments:

  1. How does an intentionally planned environment impact encounters between children and elders?
  2. How do aesthetics impact interactions?
  3. How do surprises in the environment impact participants?

Attitudinal Change:

  1. What are the participant attitudes towards other groups in the program at the outset?
  2. Do attitudes change throughout the program?
